20AVG / DRILL
1 Y-pattern combination
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u12 Court: Half

Three-player pattern that mimics a wing-to-striker combination. A passes to B, B sets to C running, C plays a through-ball back to A on the overlap.

Coaching points
• Timing of the overlap run is everything — late, then explosive
• B\'s set pass uses the inside of the foot, weighted to the runner
• C\'s through-ball lands in stride, not at the runner\'s feet
• Communicate: the overlap caller shouts 'yours!' or 'hold!'
• Finish with a cross or shot — never just pass-and-stop
2 Wide overlap and cross
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u14 Court: Half

Full-back overlaps the winger, receives in the wide channel, and delivers a cross. Drills the coordination between defender and midfielder/winger that creates wide threat.

Coaching points
• Winger holds the ball until overlap is on — then releases
• Overlap runner accelerates past at the right moment
• Communication: 'on your inside!' or 'overlap!'
• Cross with the foot furthest from the goalkeeper
• Aim for the 6-yard box, between keeper and defenders
3 Cutback finish from the byline
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u14 Court: Half

Winger drives to the byline and pulls the ball back across the face of goal. Onrushing attacker arrives to finish first-time. The most reliable goal-creating pattern in modern football.

Coaching points
• Winger gets to the byline before cutting back — no shortcuts
• Cutback travels across the 6-yard line, not into it
• Finisher times the run to arrive on the cutback, not before
• First-time finish — side-foot, low, far corner
• Stay disciplined — don\'t arrive too early or you\'re offside
4 1v1 vs keeper from 18 yards
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u12 Court: Half

The classic 1v1 finishing scenario. Striker breaks through the defensive line and must finish past an advancing keeper. Drills composure, technique, and decision-making in the moment that matters most.

Coaching points
• Read the keeper — are they coming out fast or holding the line?
• Eyes up — find the keeper before deciding the finish
• Three options: dink over (if they\'re committed), slot past (if they hold), round them (if they overcommit)
• Take the shot early — the longer you wait, the more they close the angle
• Follow in — keepers parry under pressure
