4DRILLS
60MINUTES
15AVG / DRILL
1 Rondo 4v2 in a 12-yard box
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u14 Court: Half

Step up from the 4v1: two defenders force quicker decisions and sharper body positioning. The classic Barcelona warm-up. Develops scanning, weight of pass, and composure under pressure.

Coaching points
• Always one outlet pass and one switch option visible before you receive
• First touch out of your feet — never into them
• Disguise the pass: look one way, play the other
• Defenders work as a pair, one presses, one covers the switch
• Count consecutive passes — beat your record
2 Switch of play — wing to wing
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u14 Court: Half

Practise the long diagonal pass that breaks a compact block. Players in midfield receive, set, and switch the point of attack from one flank to the other.

Coaching points
• Scan before receiving — know where the switch is going
• Lock the ankle, strike with the laces for a long driven pass
• Receiver on the far wing takes a positive first touch into space
• Body shape: open up to face the field, not the touchline
• The switch is only valuable if it arrives before the defence can shuffle
3 End-zone game
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u12 Court: Half

Teams score by dribbling the ball over a 5-yard end zone on the opposite end of the pitch. No goals or keepers. Drills attacking play in open spaces and breaking lines.

Coaching points
• Use width to find space — get to the touchlines early
• Switch the play to make the opposition shift
• Penetrate when a gap appears — don\'t keep recycling
• Defenders compress the space — make the attackers play wide
• Tempo: change pace — slow then sudden bursts
4 Counter-press trigger
0 min Difficulty: Advanced Age: u16 Court: Half

The moment possession is lost, the team that just had the ball collapses on the area within 6 seconds. Drills the Klopp/Guardiola-style counter-press — the highest-value defensive moment in the modern game.

Coaching points
• The instant the ball is lost, the nearest 3 players press hard
• Don\'t wait to recover shape — press first, organise after
• Aim to win the ball back within 6 seconds — if not, retreat
• Cut off the easy pass — force a long ball or a turnover
• Communication: 'pressed!' tells teammates to commit
