80MINUTES
20AVG / DRILL
1 Rondo 4v2 in a 12-yard box
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u14 Court: Half

Step up from the 4v1: two defenders force quicker decisions and sharper body positioning. The classic Barcelona warm-up. Develops scanning, weight of pass, and composure under pressure.

Coaching points
• Always one outlet pass and one switch option visible before you receive
• First touch out of your feet — never into them
• Disguise the pass: look one way, play the other
• Defenders work as a pair, one presses, one covers the switch
• Count consecutive passes — beat your record
2 6v3 positional rondo
0 min Difficulty: Advanced Age: u16 Court: Half

Larger-scale rondo with three lines of two players. Three defenders attempt to win the ball. Develops positional awareness, line-breaking passes, and the third-man principle.

Coaching points
• Two players per line, three lines (back, middle, front)
• Always pass forward or sideways — backward only when no forward option exists
• Line-breaking pass = pass that skips a line of defenders
• Receiver in the next line must already be open, body shape ready
• Defenders work as a unit — press the ball, cover the lines
3 Position-specific possession
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u14 Court: Half

Players keep possession within their actual playing positions in a half-pitch grid. Drills the realistic pass selections and movement patterns each role demands in a match.

Coaching points
• Stay in your zone — only leave to support an immediate pass
• Centre-backs split wide to receive from the keeper
• Full-backs push high to provide width
• Midfielders rotate — always one dropping, one holding
• Forwards stretch the defence by pinning the back line
4 6v6+2 possession game
0 min Difficulty: Intermediate Age: u14 Court: Half

Two neutral players ('jokers') play with whichever team has the ball, creating a 8v6 overload. Drills decision-making, scanning, and movement to support the ball.

Coaching points
• Always provide an angle — never stand directly behind a teammate
• Two-touch maximum encourages quick decisions
• Jokers are always available — find them when stuck
• Count consecutive passes to make it competitive
• Switch the play to find the free joker on the far side
